Fire rained down amongst the soldiers as if delivered by a blazing inferno. Their cover, their metal barriers, was the only thing that kept them safe from becoming a medium rare steak. They were trainees; recruits, Elite Marines not yet ripe for picking. Their armor wasn’t built yet. Hell, it wasn’t even designed yet, leaving them open to the ungrateful world. The only things these recruits had were urban camouflage pants and flame-retardant bulletproof vests. There were four men still in this sector, each of them strong and determined to halt the enemy attack.
Griever leaned against a metal bunker that looked like it was sliced in half as he watched the fire from the incendiary mortar spread along the cement as if it were a wave on a beach. When the fire’s life dwindled away, he quickly spun around and raised himself up, sticking his Echo sniper rifle out through the hole blown in the bunker’s side. He spotted two human replica droids running for a closer spot twelve meters across from the bunker.
With two shots in quick succession the droids fell to the cement. The sniper pulled back into cover as bullets started battering the other side of the bunker. “Never expose yourself for more than five seconds. If you want to try any longer, let me shoot you now to save some time.” The lesson one of his instructors had drilled into his mind rang in the back of his thoughts. Next to the damaged cement structure was a flipped jeep another team member was hiding behind.
Yockey was the team leader during their training exercises. This time his leadership skills were put to the ultimate test. No one else was around to save them should they mess up. They were all alone now. The tire on the back of the jeep blew. Yockey didn’t want to hide behind the jeep much longer. It was hardly adequate protection as the undercarriage of the car was facing the enemy troops.
“Always know where your enemies are. Never let them get the drop on you. If they do, then you don’t deserve the armor you’ll be wearing.” Damn it, did Yockey hate this man, but it certainly wasn’t because of his useful teachings. There were at least a dozen more Forces of Ether droids in front of them. None of the bastards were currently behind them, thankfully, although that could change at any second. The group was currently located in the battle simulation courtyard. Blast walls lined the left and right sides, creating a two hundred meter width. Jungle rested on the other sides four hundred meters apart, leaving a plenty long enough battle area. Walkways stemmed across over head, combining the other two sections of the training camp. The battleground itself was littered debris and random object to take cover behind; rocks, bunkers, vehicles, plants, sheds, and even downed airplanes.
A grenade landed a meter behind Yockey, immediately catching the soldier’s eye. Without a thought, he leaped out from behind the jeep and found himself into a full fledged run. The grenade detonated with a ferocious roar, sending the jeep ablaze, and shrapnel in any direction as well. A small triangular piece of metal that once used to be a piece of jeep grill slammed itself into the back of Yockey, who was only a meter away from Battles’s barricade. If that wasn’t bad enough for him, a plasma bolt nearly hit him as he fell forward, singing the back fabric of his vest.
Battles immediately pulled in his leader. “What the fuck was that?” he shouted. Battles was the team’s grenadier, but he wasn’t able to grab many grenades for his rifle when this had started.
Yockey repositioned his helmet, which had ‘100% success 100% of the time’ written on the side in marker. “It’s pissing me off is what it is,” the soldier shouted back. He rested against the wall and took a quick breather before stepping out of cover for a quick shot. He pulled back in a second later as another droid fell.
“See anything good?” Battles asked as he readied one of his last few grenades on his A-03 magnetically accelerated 40mm grenade launcher attachment.
“Three running towards Coconut. Three-a-clock, 20 meter distance.”
Battles turned around the corner, and fired a 40mm EMP grenade. As he pulled back into cover, the grenade activated, creating a near invisible field that destroyed the droids. They stopped in mid-run and collapsed into the cement. Hard.
Coconut scrambled out from behind a destroyed Forces of Ether disruptor tank that she was hiding behind, and dashed for Battles and Yockey. Before she even got a meter, a plasma bolt blasted through her weapon, and then struck her gut. In a second, the ammo in the clip detonated as the heat blew the gunpowder within the shells. Her run became a tumble as bits and pieces of the gun as shattered bits blew forward. Griever sent a retaliation shot at the attacker while Yockey darted out to pull her into cover. The firing stopped. Battles and Griever were now scouting.
Doors threw open along the edges of the building.
This is just a very short preview of a longer story that will never be posted on DA.

The story is about a few characters as they try to survive Elite Marine boot camp.

Yes, I rushed the ending cause I wanted to post it before I went to work.... speaking of which..of I go!
